Coaching and Mentoring Young People
Within Australia, coaching and mentoring are now key elements within national and local strategies for
working with young people. Participants will learn about the difference between coaching and mentoring
and will explore the processes and tools for coaching and mentoring young people. Participants will also
discover ways to enhance the key ‘micro skills’ needed to coach and mentor young people effectively
including:
- Building rapport.
- Effective communication.
- Giving and receiving feedback.
- Negotiation skills.
Sleep Health for Adolescents and Young Adults
This session is designed to demystify the myths about sleep, and explore the world of sleep health
for adolescents and young adults, including:
- What is ‘normal’ sleep?
- How does sleep change with age?
- What are some factors that affect sleep in young people?
- How can sleep be improved without the use of prescription medication?
- How to maintain a healthy sleep pattern in young people.
Emotional Intelligence and Young Learners
Widely popularised in the media and in psychology and teaching literature, the importance of emotional
intelligence has now increasingly been recognised in school, in work and in life. This session is
designed to build your understanding of EI by:
- Exploring the concept of EI and its usefulness.
- Assessing your own emotional intelligence.
- Gaining a clear practical guide for promoting emotional intelligence and resilience in young people.
Understanding Personalities - How People ‘Tick’
Enhancing self-awareness is said to be one of the most powerful developmental processes. In order to spark discussion
and reflection ‘about self’, staff from PKF will facilitate an entertaining and lively workshop based on a measure of
personality called the Myers Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI).
The workshop is designed to enable participants to:
- Gain a greater insight into themselves, and
- Gain some understanding of others and the potential ‘cocktail’ of personalities they work with and around.
The use of the MBTI provides participants with an understanding of their personality type and the strengths and weaknesses that influence their interactions with the young people they work with.
Strategies for Engaging and Motivation Young Learners
Many people who work with young learners want to move past traditionalist ‘passive’ style to more active
learning, to find better ways of engaging young people in the learning process. This session is designed
to help participants build their skills in the area of engaging and motivating young people. We also answer
the hard question – how do we deal with ‘disengaged’ learners?
Memory and Learning in Young People
Beginning before birth and continuing through life, the brain continues to expand, adapt, and learn. In this session,
participants will learn about how information is processed and retained for future use, and will participate in activities to
illustrate ideas.
Participants will also:
- Explore ideas for helping young learners to improve their ability to recall information.
- Discover ways to target a range of learning styles through your teaching and guidance approach.
- Learn new ways to help students make their study time more effective and useful.
- Explore the myths and truths about memory and learning.
Effective Presentation Skills - Getting and Keeping their
Attention
This session is designed to help presenters communicate effectively with today’s toughest
audience – young learners! In this session, participants will explore:
- Tips for planning your presentations.
- A different approach for getting your message across.
- Tools and techniques for grabbing attention and keeping it.
- Dealing with difficult situations effectively.
Stress and Coping – How to Recognise and Support Young People in Need
Managing the daily pressures and the inevitable peaks and troughs associated with being a young person is a substantial challenge. This insightful and empowering session is designed to assist individuals who
work with young people in any context to understand the issues surrounding stress and coping and be in a
better position to support others
Breaking the Generation Y ‘code’
For those of us who work with young people or work in a ‘young’ environment, it is important to work hard to understand and relate to young people. This session is designed to help participants understand and manage the differences across generations, in particular focussing on generation Y. The session will cover:
- Who are the generations in the workforce today and how are they different?
- How can you better manage your relationships with people in other generations?
- Tips for fostering a Generation Y friendly workplace
Young People and Careers
This session explores the topic of young people and their careers, and the ways that people who work with young people can assist in facilitating them on their career pathway. The material will centre around the following questions:
- Generation Y and careers – what’s changed?
- What do young people want in a job, in a workplace, and in a boss?
- How can we help young people to think clearly about career?
Communication Skills for Success
Communication appears to be a very basic skill. We all do it, and we practice it every day of our lives! However, it is a lot more complicated than it appears. This session will include:
- Communicating Verbally and Non-Verbally
- Questioning effectively – asking the right questions in the right way
- ‘Selling’ your ideas
- Handling Conflict
Assertive Communication and Negotiation Skills
Communication and Assertiveness are extremely important in forming positive interpersonal relationships with others, whether they be our colleagues, staff or customers (including young people!). This session begins with a discussion of the importance of clear communication in the workplace, an overview of the communication process, and examples of problems that can arise in communicating with others and how to avoid them. The second part of the session covers avoiding aggressive or passive approaches when making difficult requests, as well as how to disagree with the requests of others in a positive way.
Managing Stress at Work
Stress… is it a spark of life or a kiss of death? Occupational stress is becoming more and more in the ‘spotlight’ as a potential work hazard we all face. It is said to arise from demands experienced at work that affect our functioning both at work and outside of it. How we manage these occupational stressors determines how well we will cope with them. This session will explore…

Work Life Balance
Work-life balance relates to having, and being able to maintain, a healthy balance between work and non-work commitments. There is a significant link between work life balance, satisfaction in the workplace and productivity at work. This session is designed to help participants gain an understanding of their own work life balance, why it is important, and to begin to form strategies for achieving both satisfaction and controlover their work-life balance. This session would need to include info about your organisation’s HR initiatives in this area if relevant.
Dealing with Difficult People and Situations
Inevitably in life, we come across difficult people (someone whose attitude or behaviour hinders us achieving legitimate goals) and difficult situations(any situation in which there is a problem without an easy answer and requires you to draw on your ‘higher level’ skills to deal with it). To address this issue, this session will provide participants with tips on:
- Understanding and identifying different behavioral styles.
- Techniques for dealing with difficult people.
- Delivering constructive feedback.
- Developing an action plan to improve relationships with others.
Creative Problem Solving Skills
Sometimes, people will be faced with decisions which are not straightforward and which may require them to be creative and “think outside the square”. This topic will include:
- Decision making
- Techniques for thinking creatively
- Strategies for innovation in the work environment
